Sometimes a place overwhelms us with unexpected beauty. Saskatchewan is one such place. When our friend Julian of Go-Van reached out to us wondering if we were up for a vanlife meet up in Saskatchewan, we exclaimed YES. Followed by Saskatche-WHERE?
Three years ago, when we left New England, I could not sit ten feet from the van in the dark without spooking myself crazy. Peeing outside of the van during the night was a feat to be celebrated. Convinced that a predatory wild animal, mythical werewolf or serial killer was lurking behind a bush ready to pounce, I would count down the seconds before my life was sucked away.
The van is parked in the middle of chaos, in the eye of a human storm known as Walmart. The field of pavement rises to meet me, and as I circle the van checking out tonight’s home, the security guard circles me with his lights strobing. This, is van life.
